Create a Service Bus Namespace and Queue

What is Azure Service Bus?

Azure Service Bus is a fully managed enterprise message broker with message queues and publish-subscribe topics. It decouples applications and services, providing:

  • Reliable asynchronous message delivery
  • Structured FIFO messaging
  • Publish/subscribe capabilities
  • Complex routing and filtering

Prerequisites

Step 1 — Create a Resource Group

az group create \
  --name rg-servicebus-demo \
  --location eastus

Step 2 — Create a Service Bus Namespace

Via Azure CLI

az servicebus namespace create \
  --name sb-demo-namespace \
  --resource-group rg-servicebus-demo \
  --location eastus \
  --sku Standard

Via Azure Portal

  1. Navigate to Create a resource → search "Service Bus"
  2. Select Service BusCreate
  3. Fill in:
    • Subscription: Your subscription
    • Resource group: rg-servicebus-demo
    • Namespace name: sb-demo-namespace
    • Location: East US
    • Pricing tier: Standard
  4. Click Review + createCreate

Step 3 — Create a Queue

Via Azure CLI

az servicebus queue create \
  --name orders-queue \
  --namespace-name sb-demo-namespace \
  --resource-group rg-servicebus-demo \
  --lock-duration PT1M \
  --max-delivery-count 10 \
  --default-message-time-to-live P14D

Via Azure Portal

  1. Open your namespace in the portal
  2. Click Queues in the left menu → + Queue
  3. Enter queue name: orders-queue
  4. Configure properties (see below)
  5. Click Create

Step 4 — Configure Queue Properties

Step 5 — Explore the Portal UI

Navigate to your queue in the portal and explore:

  • Overview — message counts, active/dead-letter/scheduled
  • Shared access policies — manage connection strings
  • Properties — view and edit queue settings

Step 6 — Send a Test Message from the Portal

  1. Open your queue in the portal
  2. Click Service Bus Explorer in the left menu
  3. Click Send messages
  4. Set Content Type to application/json
  5. Enter message body:

  1. Click Send
  2. Switch to Peek tab to verify the message arrived
